30 Hairstyles for Curly Hair That Are Simple and Chic

curly hair updo

Your best bet to make your locks manageable is to do a simple updo. Curly hair tends to get frizzy and stick out in different directions unless tamed by hair gel. But daily use of hair products can have an unfortunate effect on your beautiful locks.

How to Do a Rope Twist Bun

The shorter the hair, the greater the volume, which is due to the fact that curls seem to expand when untethered from the weight of longer hairstyles. This cropped bob, in particular, is absolutely lovely, especially when paired with the sweetheart neckline of an A-line gown. When you are planning a special occasion, curly hair is a wonderful advantage.

Low Bun With Braids

Take sections from each side up, twisting them and securing with bobby pins. Work your way vertically down and don’t shy away from imperfections. The natural look of your fauxhawk updo will only raise its style points. Formal updos for curly hair are a challenge when looking for something sleek and pulled back, but most curls can be tamed with a serum. This bun is created by cutting the toe end of a tube sock off, rolling it up, threading a pony tail through and pinning the strands back down, over the sock. Not all cute curly hairstyles are best suited for being at a bridal party or going to a special event.

Creative Updos for Curly Hair

This stunning bride proves that long spirals (and a curly full bang!) look delightful with a whimsical flower crown and cascading veil combo. For a more refined approach, this raked-back style is one to know. While the elegant chignon is gorgeous on its own, it is further romanced by the addition of creamy white roses and greenery. Natural texture and brushed-out curls take on a decidedly 70's vibe when kept to a single, long length.

Use a light hairspray to maintain the style and control frizz. For a more textured look, add extra pieces from the top sections and pin around the chignon. For humidity-resistant looks that enhance your natural texture, find out how to select the right products and styling tricks. Updos, like any hairstyle or cut, should accentuate your features. Adding a chunky headband or statement accessory that matches your outfit will support a minimal effort towards comfort and still have you looking totally put together.

Working with Tracee Ellis Ross's natural texture, stylist Nai'vasha created a high bun on the actress while leaving out the ends to create faux bangs. Use dry texture spray if your sections are slippery and need extra hold. The dual texture will disguise any tell-tale signs an impending wash day. Pull your curls back into a high bun and clip on a pony like the Jordyn x Easilocks Instant Ponytail (£40)—so easy and luxe. If you have fine curls that don’t give enough volume for a bun you can get the look with the Feme Collection Afro Puffs (from £18).

Bantu Knots

When approaching straightened, smooth results on short, natural hair, be diligent and take your time, working in fine sections. Don't crank up the heat to your dryer's highest setting because you could burn the scalp when concentrating on the root areas and cause breakage. Instead, have finishing tools on hand like this tiny flat iron and a root tamer, and always apply a heat protectant. Natural silver and pastel purple hair colors create one of the most whimsical updos for curly mane.

As this style from @hair_by_pelorossi exemplifies, curly hair can look low-key and wearable any day of the week. Add in some fun braids with bantu knots for extra cuteness. If you’re planning an evening out, sporting a sweet, loose top-bun is an absolute must. An especially flattering style for long thicker hair, it can also be done for medium length fine strands. Tease your hair at the roots to create the necessary height, and gather curls loosely on the crown, securing with pins and hairspray. One of the best aspects about having your curled hair worn up?

Despite the challenges posed by different hair lengths and textures, various updo styles can be achieved, including those for short hair and hair with extensions. The ideal hair length for updos is medium to long, as it offers greater styling flexibility. Many of us want a voluminous updo but don’t have the natural hair thickness or length to achieve it. If that’s your dilemma, don’t worry; you can easily achieve a gorgeous updo with a curly drawstring ponytail.

Curly updos, when done correctly, do not damage your hair. However, it is essential to be gentle when handling natural curls, using a wide-tooth comb to avoid breakage and frizz. Maintaining good hair care practices will help ensure your curls remain healthy and strong. You can also use ouchless hair accessories (e.g., a bobby pin) designed for curly tresses. If you don’t like the unruliness of your curly hair, tame it with braids and tight ponytails. Move from lounging at the beach during the day to rocking out at an indie concert at night with the same fun updo.

By mastering these easy curly hair updos, you’ll have a stylish ace up your sleeve for any occasion. Twisting and pinning your natural curls into chic chignons or textured twists allows you to embrace your texture while achieving effortless, polished looks. A bright red bandana in a solid color or with a print (like polka dots) will accent a high ponytail for curly hair superbly. If you have curly or wavy hair, you are most likely looking for new ways to deal with it. Updos for curly hair can make your life with unruly locks much easier. Women are always searching for an approach to make their hair look beautiful without too much effort.

You can leave soft curls down your face for a flirty vibe and a framing effect. What we love about this style is that it doesn’t look like every other updo out there – it features a middle part rather than a side one. It also has a ton of volume in the crown, which adds inches to your height and visually slims down your face. It features cornrows braided up into a high bun and big, voluptuous curls in the front that resemble a side bang.

But the fact cannot be ignored that they look so charming and gorgeous if managed well. Here we have brought these 10 updos for curly-haired girls to make them fall In love with their curly locks more and more. Keeping the curly hair open tends to frizz them up more, so these updos would make you learn the easy taming ways for your curls be it any day or the event. Updo hairstyles can make your curly hair look stunning. Women with straight hair envy girls with curly locks, while curly girls hope for hair that’s easy to take care of, it’s the fact. Updos for curly hair can take the hassle out of making your mane look neat and beautiful for the whole day.

STEP #6: FORM YOUR BUN

curly hair updo

The beauty of this hairstyle is how easily you can dress it up or down, depending on the event. Pair it with a bright lip and some overalls for a funky, casual look, or go the evening route with a clean cat eye and an LBD. Either way, the style takes about three minutes to execute. Apply a thin layer over your curls to preserve their texture. Ditch the space buns for this super chic, sophisticated set of low buns.

Flat Twists Updo

His work has been mentioned in countless notable publications on men's care and style and has been cited in Seeker, Wikihow, GQ, TED, and Buzzfeed. Your choice of hair accessory should complement your unique style.

Updo for Curly Hair with a Side Braid

This playful, curly lob is totally dreamy and adds a touch of youthfulness and bounce to this bride's overall aesthetic. We love how the center part accentuates the balanced symmetry of the square neckline, to boot. This mermaid hair moment is a showstopper for sure, especially when worn at a beach or summer wedding.

Ballerina Bun

For a refresher, use a curl refresher spray on dry curls. Don’t forget to leave some product in your hair for long-lasting texture. Then, twist the top sections, incorporating new pieces as you go, and secure the twists to the ponytail with bobby pins. "Updo" doesn't have to translate to a boring twist or bun—there's so much you can do in terms of architecture, accessories… you name it. Read on for tons of updo inspiration as well as a few tips to help you recreate these styles on your own.

Easy Curly Twisted Updo

The diffusing allowed her fine texture to have as much volume as possible with minimum teasing. I highly recommend spiral or corkscrew hairpins if someone wants to attempt this style. Finishing this style with some hairspray will keep the flyaways at bay. Try a sophisticated romantic low updo because it truly embraces your natural curls.

(Plus, your bone structure will really shine.) To make it even funkier, secure with a chic, elevated scrunchie like Lupita Nyong'o did on the red carpet. To guarantee a seamless finish devoid of stray hairs, commence by utilizing a mild hairspray that repels moisture, such as Tresemmé. You almost wouldn't know there's a full-on braid in the back of this style.

Half Curled, Half Braided Updo

Follow the instructions for #5, but be sure to backcomb the areas you want volume before securing your hair back. In terms of products, use a generous coat of texturizer, like the Ouai Air Dry Foam ($28). Despite appearances, it doesn't get much easier than an eye-catching French twist. This style is great, as it works better with unwashed hair. The rules stay the same regardless of texture, be it curly and thick or straight and fine.

Banded Ponytail

Finish off this hairstyle with a light mist of hairspray for a long-lasting style. Be sure to keep some curls visible around your face for a flattering finish. If you’re like us, then you’re all about flaunting fluffy curls. The high puff is another one of the best natural curly hair updos for putting your ringlets on display.

Another tip is that a small curling wand is a great tool to define the curls further. It curls the hair in a way that still gives a natural effect. I recommend this hairstyle to anyone looking for a soft, relaxed style. It is suitable for a bride, adding fresh flowers and a veil, but equally suitable without accessories if you go to dinner with friends.

Not only is this half updo stylish, but it will also help keep the curls out of your face while dancing. Start with a volumizing product, like a mousse, to add some texture. Pull the top half of your hair back and secure it with an elastic band. Finally, lightly pull apart the curls and use some hairspray to keep your look in place.

A high bun with flower pins will make your updo appear more voluminous, while pulled down locks will give more expression to your curly updo. With braided hairstyles on the top of your mind, we couldn’t help but put the half-up double braid with loose curls on your radar as well. Featuring two Dutch braids that transform into soft, loose curls, this sassy look can’t be beat.

So many of my parents' friends and family members joined them in this exodus, which my Uncle Jack facetiously called “the great brain drain.” Over time, as more of them arrived, it often felt as though we were back in the Seventh Ward, the Treme or the Marigny neighborhoods of New Orleans. My mother, a Xavier University graduate with a degree in education, who was being groomed to become one of the first Black school administrators in the city, put her ambitions on hold. She closed up the beautiful yellow brick house that my father built for us on Eads Street, where we lived around the corner from her mother, down the street from my dad’s parents, and down the block from my dad’s grandmother and aunt.

At one time, the boulevard was dotted with little bits of New Orleans. Biden signs $95-billion military aid measure that includes path to ban TikTok Los Angeles Times

TikTok has attracted unwanted scrutiny not only for the addictiveness of its constantly scrolling videos, but also due to its Chinese owner, ByteDance. That has raised concerns among lawmakers and security experts that the Chinese government could tap TikTok's trove of personal data about millions of U.S. users. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson speaks to the press after the chamber passed a major aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan on April 20.

Russia now appears focused on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city. Russian forces have exploited air defense shortages in the city, pummeling the region’s energy infrastructure, and looking to shape conditions for a potential summer offensive to seize the city. California's population had been booming ever since it became a state in 1850 as a gold rush prompted a surge of people crossing the frontier to seek their fortune in the West.

"It comes at a moment of grave urgency, with Israel facing unprecedented attacks from Iran, and Ukraine under continued bombardment from Russia," Biden said. The president urged the Senate to quickly send it to his desk for signature. “It’s going to be a royal mess,” said Anupam Chander, a visiting scholar at the Institute for Rebooting Social Media at Harvard and an expert on the global regulation of new technologies. The issue could take months or even years to settle, during which the app would probably continue to function for U.S. consumers. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, lobbied his colleagues to reject the package, saying 41 senators could join to filibuster it. The president concluded his remarks without mentioning the package's crackdown on TikTok.

House passes foreign aid bills to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan

A bill that would force a sale of TikTok by its Chinese owner, ByteDance — or ban it outright — was passed by the Senate on Tuesday and signed into law Wednesday by President Biden. Send me exclusive offers, unique gift ideas, and personalized tips for shopping and selling on Etsy. LOS ANGELES (AP) — At least 55 people were hurt, two seriously, when a Metro light rail train and a University of Southern California shuttle bus collided Tuesday along a busy thoroughfare in downtown Los Angeles, officials said. TikTok users could soon find that the popular social media service is either under new ownership or, although it wouldn't happen immediately, outright banned in the U.S. On explicit orders from Biden, White House officials also avoided directly attacking Johnson over the stalled aid — a directive the president repeatedly instilled in his senior staff. At the time, the House was in chaos because the Republican majority had been unable to select a speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield, who had been removed more than two weeks earlier.

“Hell’s Kitchen” and “The Outsiders” will duke it out for best musical, while “Stereophonic” was nominated for best play. "It’s going to make America safer, it’s gonna make the world safer, and it continues America’s leadership in the world, and everyone knows gives vital support to America’s partners," Biden said Wednesday in remarks praising the package's passage. "And so they can defend themselves against threats to their sovereignty."

Congress passed the measure citing national security concerns because of TikTok’s Chinese ties. Both lawmakers and security experts have said there are risks that the Chinese government could lean on ByteDance for access to sensitive data belonging to its 170 million U.S. users or to spread propaganda. The Senate late Tuesday passed a broad legislative package that delivers $95 billion in foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies. The bill, which had already been approved in the House, also includes a provision that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the U.S. if the popular platform's Chinese owner doesn't sell its stake within a year.

It’s been a frenetic period on Broadway as shows rushed to open before April 25, the eligibility cut off for nominations. That led to the premieres of roughly a dozen shows over the course of two weeks, with the likes of “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club,” “Patriots,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Suffs” and “Illinoise” all debuting in quick succession. “Hell’s Kitchen,” a musical inspired by Alicia Keys’ teenage years in New York City, and “Stereophonic,” the story of a rock group in danger of splintering, dominated the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. The two shows, one focused on a pre-celebrity pop titan coming into her talent and the other examining a darker, druggier side of the music industry, picked up a leading 13 nods. They were followed closely by “The Outsiders,” a musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s coming-of-age novel and the Francis Ford Coppola film of the same name, which earned 12 nominations.

Will TikTok Be Banned in the U.S.? What the New Law Means for the App’s Users

Tucked into the measure is a provision that gives TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance, nine months to sell it or face a nationwide prohibition in the United States. The president can grant a one-time extension of 90 days, bringing the timeline to sell to one year, if he certifies that there’s a path to divestiture and “significant progress” toward executing it. There was speculation that Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene would trigger a motion to vacate the speaker after Saturday's vote.

Actually, lawmakers want ByteDance to sell its stake in TikTok. Barring such a deal, the legislation would, in fact, ban the social media app in the U.S. "At the stage that the bill is signed, we will move to the courts for a legal challenge," Beckerman, head of public policy for the Americas at TikTok, wrote. "We'll continue to fight, as this legislation is a clear violation of the First Amendment rights" of TikTok users. White House officials came to view Johnson as a direct and honest actor throughout the negotiations, according to a senior administration official. Biden had success finding common ground with Republicans earlier in his term to win the passage of a $1-trillion infrastructure deal, legislation to boost the U.S. semiconductor industry and an expansion of federal healthcare services for veterans exposed to toxic smoke from burn pits.

California bases its estimate on a number of factors, including births and deaths, drivers license address changes, vehicle registration and enrollment in the government-funded health insurance programs of Medicaid and Medicare. Meanwhile, growth from legal international immigration - which has been California's growth engine for decades - rebounded with a net gain of 114,200 people in 2023, or almost back to the same level it was before the pandemic. California gained population last year for the first time since 2019, according to a new estimate released Tuesday by Gov. Gavin Newsom's administration. "I hope they will not move forward with that," he said of the GOP trio that is sponsoring the motion to vacate resolution.

Bespoke Web Development: Ultimate Guide

bespoke website design

As their demand grows, they will need to be able to scale their application. And, of course, their performance must always be top-tier to keep customers interested. The following section will discover a few scenarios that call for a bespoke web design. The cost of a bespoke eCommerce website can vary greatly depending on the project's scope, the website's complexity, and the team you hire to develop it.

Bespoke Website Design VS Template

So the original design was bespoke, but the version that you get will be an altered version of what everyone else has. A lot of the time this is just different terminology for the same situation - an off-the-shelf design with some changes made to it. But when it comes to "bespoke", you might find that different agencies have very different interpretations of what that actually means. This makes it easier for visitors to quickly find the information they need and navigate the website.

React Native: The Key to Streamlining Mobile App Development

It offers distinguished services in web hosting, web design, contact management, social media, SEO, mobile applications, graphic design, and more. It helps brands improve their online presence and increase their influence. Proven ROI offers online solutions for small businesses and large corporations in Los Angeles. The team leverages its experience in web design and development for clients wanting to boost their online presence and generate more revenue.

How do our subscription design services compare with hiring employees?

A bespoke web design would be more beneficial for global brands similar to Chipotle. We completely rethought the website concept for this EdTech project and offered a new, elegant, and user-friendly solution built on Webflow. Our team included 2 UI/UX designers, a web developer, a QA specialist, and a project manager. The cost of a bespoke design website will depend on many factors, such as the complexity of the design, the number of features, the size of the site, and the type of platform used. Generally, a bespoke website can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 or more.

However, not everyone uses the same definition, and there are agencies that will offer "bespoke" or "custom" web design, without it being truly original. The Frank Body Brand offers clean body and skincare derived from natural ingredients. As five friends sipped coffee, they thought about how cool it would be to create a clean skincare coffee made of delicious coffee beans to liven up the skincare industry and soften the skin. Creating a bespoke web design isn’t cheap or quick due to the many players and processes involved. However, the investment is worth it if you want 100% control over your website’s narrative. Entering the site felt like tuning into a quirky, glitchy TV channel, sparking an immediate interest and anticipation for what was to come.

Custom web development is designed around your specific business objectives and user needs, unlike off-the-shelf solutions that may require compromises. Bespoke websites can be quicker than templates, as there are generally fewer plugins used, and the code is leaner. This will help to keep customers interested, while not risking slowing down sales conversions and aiding user experience and SEO rankings. It's a commitment to an outstanding user experience, understanding the audience's unique needs.

Once you’ve known the purpose of the website, the next step is to do thorough research to understand the nuances of the industry. Here, you want to start by mapping out your competitors and industry thought leaders. This means you can’t determine if a company is one of the best based on its design portfolio.

Why you should choose custom web design services

After all, we can’t help you accomplish your goals without helping your customers accomplish theirs. A bespoke website design takes into account these aspects and is created and built according to your requirements. Yes, a quick and convenient solution to getting online quicker; there are drawbacks too though. Also, if you’re a company aiming to grow, a website created from a theme will be unable to grow alongside you. This is where the framework of a design is created and reused on a client-by-client basis. The structure remains the same, however, you can add your brand elements to it to make it yours.

The decoupled nature of the architecture means the design and content management are separated and linked via APIs. Hence the front-end design is usually bespoke - as you are not managing it via an all-in-one website builder. Bespoke website development refers to website builds that are unique custom builds, hand-crafted, or tailor-made for a specific use case.

We feel that a proven track record of success is necessary for being considered the world’s top web design company. Out-of-the-box websites typically involve templates with predetermined components, layouts, and functionalities.

As this site will be built with the client’s exact requirements in mind, bespoke sites can be more easily updated by the end user. Meaning, as new technology rolls out (or the needs of your business change), you’ll be able to expand and have these integrated. You want your website to be as unique your business, but this is only possible by working with a specialist web development team. Collaborating closely, we ensure the layout aligns seamlessly with your goals and user expectations. Like a bespoke suit, the main disadvantages tend to be cost and time to deliver. Then, you’ll select your favorite web design and we’ll transfer the copyright and send you the final files.

A company that offers a SaaS product will also likely need a bespoke web design. The company will need to design the website tailored to their customer needs. I frequently visit websites whose layouts resemble one another, often made from popular, ready-made services like Squarespace, GoDaddy, and WordPress. Yet, occasionally, I discover a bespoke web design that captures my attention with its cool animations, unique functionality, and seamless transitions. Custom websites tend to be of higher quality than those created with generic templates. Your custom website, using a bespoke website design model, can be built to fit your business needs without the restrictions of a template.

Their articles have been featured on 10Best for the past decade, as well as in national and international print and online media. Cruise passengers gather on the bow of the Viking Octantis as it transits from Lake Huron into Lake Superior via the Soo Locks on St. Marys River in Michigan. The Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System is considered one of the longest deep draft navigation systems, and one of the most outstanding engineering feats of the 20th century. Viking Great Lakes Cruise Itineraries Visit Big Cities and Hidden Gems

All transfers must be in conjunction with a Viking-purchased cruise, cruisetour, land extension or extra hotel nights. Viking reserves the right to correct errors or omissions and to change any and all fares, fees and surcharges at any time. The cruise ship fuel surcharge is additional revenue to Viking Cruises, as are any additional charges relating to currency fluctuation other than for fully paid cruise fares and full fares, which fluctuations are beyond our control. I feel a sense of awe, respect and trepidation as I stare out at the lake’s unpredictable waters. The world’s largest freshwater lake is 406 metres at its deepest, with waves that can get as high as 9 metres (30 feet).

Highlights of Great Lakes Cruises

A crane lifts John, the sub, off the floor of a giant hangar and slides it out a hatch into the water. Then, a Zodiac takes us out to the 11-tonne beast, which can submerge to 300 metres for up to 10 hours. She tells us that 50 species are at risk here, including the bald eagle, Blanding’s turtle, Massasauga rattlesnake, and many other mammals, reptiles, plants, fish, and insects. These are all at risk because of climate change, invasive species, and human development’s encroachment on the ecosystem.

Viking Great Lakes Cruises Offer Fascinating Glimpse of Regional Nature, Wildlife

Demand is so high that Viking has decided to deploy its second expedition ship, Viking Polaris, to the region in 2023. And we got up early (with more than 50 other passengers) to witness the weekly -- for now -- launching of a weather balloon off the top deck. Thanks to its partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Viking Octantis (and Viking Polaris) have joined the sanctioned list of 102 other weather balloon launch stations sanctioned by the U.S. The balloons have transmitters that collect data on wind, temperature, and pressure.

Octantis and Polaris are the only cruise vessels permitted to release helium-filled weather balloons with a radiosonde that helps with storm prediction. One morning, we have the thrill of watching the ship scientists release the balloon off deck seven. We then reconvene at Expedition Central to watch the data—temperature, atmospheric pressure, and humidity—being transmitted in real-time. Octantis has an impressive working science lab that collects biological, atmospheric, and oceanographic data. Up to 36 experts, including an expedition leader, photographer, naturalists, field research scientists, and various specialists, accompany each journey.

NEW! Canada & East Coast Explorer

From urban skylines to uninhabited islands, discover North America’s wilderness alongside renowned cultural attractions while cruising the striking waterways of the Great Lakes. Immerse yourself in the lakes’ compelling shipping history, experience the power of the thundering Niagara Falls and keep watch for scores of migratory birds at Point Pelee. Led by a team of experts, explore sheltered bays and woodlands to uncover complex ecosystems and hidden treasures. For starters, there's a 36-person expedition team, which includes scientists, marine specialists, naturalists and guides.

Day by Day

The submarines, in particular, require that passengers sign a waiver, acknowledge they can transfer to and from the sub from a zodiac, and agree to be weighed. If not being able to ride in the sub or use some of the other special equipment would ruin your vacation, this probably isn't the right trip for you. Viking's 15-day itineraries visit all five of the Great Lakes, giving passengers a chance to traverse the Soo Locks as well as visit Niagara Falls. The shorter, eight-day cruises use either Thunder Bay, Ontario, or Milwaukee as a homeport and visit lakes Huron, Superior and Michigan. These, too, go through the Soo Locks, dubbed the “Linchpin of the Great Lakes” by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. In Georgian Bay (Parry Sound), Ontario, some passengers opted for landscape painting with a local artist, while others learned about local efforts to revive the craft of making birch bark canoes.

Legendary waters & scenic landscapes

Expedition Central is also where we spent time studying the dozen full-size felt birds, including a bald eagle, a red headed woodpecker, and a common loon, that we were likely to see for real in the wild, during our trip. Viking commissioned felt artist Susan Beal from Vermont to make 96 super-realistic birds so that different sets can be displayed in each region Octantis (and Polaris) will visit. Many much-appreciated stateroom amenities, such as heated bathroom floors and 24-hour room service, are carried over here too. In a pre-cruise media presentation in the ship’s impressive, high-tech auditorium called the Aula, Hagen said it was partly because cruising out of Chicago just did not work out.

Highlights of the Great Lakes & Canada Cruises

(American Queen Voyages is the only Great Lakes cruise provider who currently sails from Navy Pier in Chicago). The paths along the Killarney Mountain Lodge on Georgian Bay offer pristine views of the lake and its unique flora and fauna. It's also the site of The Big Dipper, completed in 2020 by Canada's most famous canoeist, Mike Ranta. Weighing in at 22,000 pounds with a length of 110 feet, it carries the distinction of being the world's largest paddle. The quaint town of Parry Sound, Ontario, boasts the world's deepest natural freshwater port.

Discover the maze of granite islands that comprise Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve while hiking and kayaking through its tranquil beauty and admiring sweeping vistas. Experience Victorian charm on Mackinac Island and venture into the boreal forests of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park on Lake Superior’s northern shore. Explore coastal wetlands replete with birdlife, comb pristine beaches and get acquainted with native cultures of the northern Great Lakes. Sail the vast waterways of the Great Lakes, the largest freshwater system in the world.

John bobs around in the waves as I clamber, in special dive shoes, onto the floating platform, down the hatch into one of six passenger seats. We face the centre and once the hatch closes, our seats rotate 180 degrees to watch the water through 270-degree spherical windows made of acrylic. As the pilot takes us deeper and deeper, I have no sense of how far down we are, as there is no air pressure change.

The Ojibway used to run birch bark canoes up and down the Seguin River, called the Ziigwaan in Anishinaabe. In 2019, the Georgian Bay Anishinaabek Youth group built a traditional canoe from birch bark, cedar, white ash and white spruce, a practice deeply rooted in their culture, connecting people to the water, land and one another. Beautifully designed with a minimalist style and focus on Scandi hygge, the ship serves as a research vessel supporting environmental protection in the Great Lakes and incorporates visits to Indigenous communities. "It's in our backyard, and it's one of the largest ecosystem services we have in the world," Errera said of the region. "I don't think people have had a chance to explore them and see how big they really are."

No surprise that it is the resting place of more than 350 ships, the most famous memorialized in Gordon Lightfoot’s song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The two expedition ships carry 378 passengers apiece and blend nature exploration with comfort and luxury. Both ships have a wide variety of restaurants, comfortable and spacious cabins, and a highly credentialed expedition team whose aim is to help guests learn about the destinations they visit and the creatures that call the Great Lakes home.

Explore the picturesque islands of the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve and admire their bucolic landscapes. Venture out to Flowerpot Island in the Fathom Five National Marine Park and marvel at the stunning pink granite isles of the Benjamins Islands. Participate in lab studies as you explore coastal wetlands and delve into the Native cultures of the Great Lakes.

River cruises dock right in the heart of your destinations which puts you in the center of the action. Choose from offered excursions, independent exploration of a seamless combination of both. Many river cruises offer a complimentary excursion in each port, FREE Wi-Fi, onboard beverages with meals – such as wine, beer and more.

Checking out the world's largest paddle

I eat dinner most nights at the buffet-style World Café, which has a sushi bar and amazing seafood, including surf and turf. At Manfredi’s (one of four restaurants on the ship), I try the excellent bistecca alla Fiorentina, porcini mushroom soup and gnocchi alla romana. Mansen’s, a casual deli named for Viking Founder and Chairman Torstein Hagen’s mother, serves traditional Norwegian food, including smorbrod (open-faced sandwiches) and heart-shaped waffles with brown goat cheese.

Are the Submarines Being Used on Viking Great Lakes Cruises?

For those who have sailed on one of Viking’s ocean ships, the Octantis expedition ship (and its twin, Viking Polaris, which will begin sailing later in 2022) will immediately feel familiar. The 665-foot-long, Polar Class 6 ship carries 378 guests and 256 crewmembers and sailed its inaugural in Antarctica before heading north. It is summering in the Great Lakes region before heading back to the Antarctic and other destinations. While there are many Viking shore excursions on Mackinac Island, we decided to hike up to Fort Mackinac State Historic Park, where we saw this lovely panorama with a view of our ship. Cross the width of Lake Superior between Duluth and the Soo Locks, exploring the lake’s North Shore Inside Passage as you sail. To learn more about each port of call and our included as well as optional excursions, click on the individual days below.

For cruise and travel enthusiasts looking for something familiar yet different and closer to home, Great Lakes River Cruises are a perfect fit. Explore parts of the U.S. and Canada on lovely, well-appointed and smaller ships wherein you can experience wonderful locales and meet like-minded new friends. Itineraries include sailings in the U.S. from Milwaukee, Mackinac Island, Duluth, Detroit and Chicago. While our canceled sub ride was disappointing, there were plenty of other activities to keep us engaged and entertained off the ship during our one sea day and our days in tiny ports. In each port there is at least one included excursion, although most days there were several additional included hikes and other activities led by members of the ship’s expedition team or local guides.

Ask your Viking Expert for more information.Pre & Post Cruise Extensions vary by itinerary and are subject to change. Discover this car-free island by carriage, bicycle or on foot; kayak along the shoreline. All offers are based on select sailings and categories and are subject to availability at time of booking. Nor do I catch a glimpse of Mishipeshu, the legendary lynx-like water spirit the Ojibwe believe dwells in the depths of the lake, a symbol of its great power. Casson painted a watercolour of this same spectacular scene, with the mouth of the Baie Fine in the near distance, the La Cloche Islands in the mid-distance, and Manitoulin Island in the skyline. He called it “Baie Fine Entrance,” and he used the power of his artistry to successfully advocate for preventing this pristine treasure from becoming a mine and declaring it a provincial park.

The Georgian Bay Biosphere has helped rescue turtle eggs from road construction, planted 500 native plants in pollinator patches throughout the Biosphere, and opened an apiary housing thousands of honey bees. While most passengers on board appear to be Americans, I do meet some Canadians keen for a grand adventure close to home. Bev Vanstone, from Toronto, spotted the ship last summer from her cottage near Killbear Provincial Park. Though not an off-the-ship excursion, a highlight of this Great Lakes itinerary is the ship’s passage through the gravity-powered Soo Locks, which were built in 1885 and connect Lake Superior to Lake Huron. Staterooms have plenty of storage space, coffeemakers, high-quality loaner binoculars, and a drying closet for bathing suits and other wet gear.

Visiting Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada

And once the balloon was out of sight, passengers rushed to Expedition Central to watch the real-time data arriving on the computers. Outdoors, the sunken Finse Terrace, just outside the Aula auditorium, was our favorite spot for relaxing in an out-of-the-way retreat with heated couches, lava rock firepits, and a hedge surround. Indoors, we found plenty of comfortable seating nooks and viewing spots, along with an impressive art collection that includes historic black and white photograph reproductions from polar expeditions and of explorers such as Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen. We found or sections honoring other iconic explorers such as aviator Amelia Earhart as well. The Viking Voyager app has a fact-filled audio tour on the art throughout the ship, but we were happy to just stop on each floor and in the corridors to be amazed at what these early adventurers endured.

Passengers are encouraged to upload photos and details of their wildlife sightings onto apps such as iNaturalist, eBird, and Globe Cloud Observer. The ship also has a ferry box that measures the water’s temperature, oxygen, and evidence of microplastics, building up a data set about how the water is changing. This data is shared with scientists at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research, which is engaged in water research. But still, the experience is sublime and renews my respect for these beautiful bodies of water, which should never be taken for granted.

The Canadian Pacific Railroad trestle adds to the picturesque views to behold in this charming port-of-call. Made famous by the 1980 movie "Somewhere in Time," filmed on location here, Mackinac Island is a gem of the Great Lakes cruise. Steeped in the charm of simpler times, this bucolic haven in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan preserves picturesque Victorian buildings along car-free streets traversed only by horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, and pedestrians. The journey includes stops in Niagara Falls, Door County in Wisconsin, and Michigan's Mackinac Island, a car-free oasis where horse-drawn carriages are a preferred method of transportation. Viking Expeditions launched a new 15-day Great Lakes itinerary for summer 2023 starting in Toronto and sailing to Duluth, Minn. — giving passengers the chance to experience each of the five Great Lakes. Often cruise lines offer special rates that cannot be displayed to the general public.

This includes lectures and even lab work, as Viking's expedition ships are working science vessels, and they engage their passengers in "citizen science." Ashore, the Great Lakes are a birders paradise, a great spot to spot bald eagles, loons, sandhill cranes and cormorants. To aid in spotting, Viking has an ornithologist on its expedition team, as well as an onboard display of full-size, realistic felt birds of the region. The birds, works of art in themselves, are part of a larger collection of birds Viking commissioned from Vermont felt artist Susan Beal. Wolves and bears are also found in the region and along the shores and may occasionally be spotted from the safety of zodiac and SOB rides.

Each ship is equipped with a wide range of expedition gear, including two yellow submarines (named Paul and George on Octantis and dubbed George and Ringo on Polaris) and two high-end Special Operations Boats, which are comically called SOBs. These military-grade vessels offer comfortable, high-speed journeys and are loaded and unloaded from inside the cruise ship. Rides on all these are free, though they require reservations and are subject to weather. Visiting the Great Lakes by expedition ship offers the opportunity to see the region in an intimate way. If you're booking this trip, be aware that the "toys" will not be used in U.S. waters and are sometimes unavailable due to weather or technical conditions.

We were pleased to see that Viking Octantis has made room for a well-equipped fitness room. We highly recommend adding a pre- or post-expedition overnight stay in Thunder Bay. The majestic Kakabeka Falls, known as the "Niagara of the North," is another highlight. Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is the home of the famous Sea Lion Arch, seen here from a Viking special operations boat. Outfitted with hydraulic seats and handrails for comfort and safety, this vessel explores the Great Lakes at an exhilarating speed. The boats are perfect for photographers as they get to different scenic points in record time.

In most ports on the Viking Great Lakes Cruises the list of included activities is much longer. Our scheduled submarine ride was canceled due to a technical issue, but those we spoke with who did get their turn in the sub enjoyed the novelty of the adventure, although most said they did not see much in the Great Lakes waters. And in the spirit of exploration (and because we asked nicely) Dr. Damon Stanwell-Smith, Viking’s Head of Science and Sustainability, was kind enough to bring out a set of the Antarctic felt birds, including penguins, for a special display. The new itinerary is among a handful Viking operates on the Great Lakes and one of a few new trips the cruise line has unveiled for 2023. It's set to take place aboard the new Viking Polaris, which can accommodate 378 guests in its 189 staterooms.
